Write a Resume For Results - When You Have 2 Different Careers

If all positions have been in the same occupational field, than writing a good resume takes work, but isn't too challenging.

If, however, you changed course somewhere in your career and have had very different types of working experiences, writing a resume takes more thought and can be a challenging document to develop.

Many of us received a degree in one field, worked it for a number of years, and then, for whatever reason, decided to change into a totally different occupational field.

So the first question I would ask is whether finding a position in either career path is acceptable? In today's labor market, having the opportunity to follow two different potential career paths is a huge advantage! You have twice as many options.

So if your answer is yes, I can go either way, Ftce math then I would recommend developing two separate resumes. For example, if you were a Buyer in retail and then switched gears at some point and became an Executive Director of a small non-profit sometime later, I would develop one resume that highlights your retail experience and all of the skills, abilities and competencies that you possess for potential positions in that field.

A different resume would be developed for the executive director level experience. Ditto for the qualifications, skills and competencies.

Although you would briefly mention all of the positions you held in both of the resumes, each resume would focus on the appropriate objectives, expertise and accomplishments/successes that you can bring to the table for that particular profession/occupation.

Trying to combine both into one resume results in a muddled resume.
